Brazil versus Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia and Paraguay for citizenship

Brazil can be attractive for a genuine long-term life. It is not automatically the best passport route for every applicant.

Brazil versus Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia and Paraguay for citizenship — genuine residence, eligible route, nationality retention

By Ties Jezuit · Reviewed 14 October 2026 · General orientation

Why Brazil deserves a serious look

Brazil’s official ordinary-naturalisation guide gives a standard four-year residence period, with specified reductions. Its one-year grounds include a Brazilian child or a genuine marriage or stable union with a Brazilian, subject to the conditions described by the authority. Indefinite residence, Portuguese ability, records and permitted absences also matter. A reduced eligibility period is not a guaranteed decision date. A Dutch applicant must separately assess whether Dutch nationality will be retained.

Argentina is more than an old two-year headline

The Argentine government’s 2025 reform describes two years of continuous legal residence without departures for the ordinary route. Litigation, subsequent changes and implementation must be checked before relying on that formulation for a 2026 application. Do not combine a frequently travelling lifestyle with an old promise that a mailing address is enough. Compare actual residence, procedure, processing and the consequences of acquiring nationality, not just the shortest number on a chart.

Uruguay and Chile have different frameworks

Uruguay’s legal-citizenship procedure uses habitual residence and distinguishes relevant family circumstances; it is not interchangeable with every country’s nationality framework. Passport treatment deserves specific current review. Chile’s ordinary route generally involves five years of residence and permanent status, with a separate qualified route for certain established links. Shorter special routes cannot be presented as available to everyone. Both require a life and evidence that fit the legal category.

Bolivia and Paraguay are different commitments

Bolivia’s naturalisation framework is often summarised through uninterrupted residence, but the exact route, reduced grounds and current official checklist must be confirmed before filing; this guide does not certify your eligibility there. Paraguay’s court checklist requires three years of permanent residence counted from the admission resolution before starting the process, alongside its other evidence. Neither a temporary card nor a cédula is a passport promise.

My practical comparison

For someone genuinely building a Brazilian family life and able to meet the requirements, Brazil may be a strong first investigation. Someone committed to another country may rationally choose its longer path instead. Compare retaining your original nationality, the residence you can actually sustain, language, work, family rights and legal certainty. Brazil is an option to assess, not a country to select solely for a certificate. Commission a dated, applicant-specific comparison before an irreversible nationality decision.
