Why you should report crypto correctly in the Netherlands — classify the activity, keep the records, report accurately

By Ties Jezuit · Reviewed 14 October 2026 · General orientation

Holdings and income are different questions

Belastingdienst generally places privately held crypto in box 3, with valuation and return rules that depend on the applicable tax year. Work paid in crypto, business activity and activities going beyond ordinary investment can involve other treatment. Mining is not automatically a tax-free hobby in every factual situation. Use the authority’s current guidance for your actual activity rather than assuming every token balance follows one simple rule.

A wallet is not an exemption

Assets can remain reportable whether held through an exchange, hardware wallet or another arrangement. Reporting an asset does not necessarily mean tax is due: allowances, total assets, relevant return calculations and personal circumstances matter. Do not confuse a provider’s failure to issue a report with your own lack of a filing obligation. Keep evidence even for an old wallet you no longer use regularly.

Keep records you can reconcile

Preserve acquisition costs, transactions, transfers between your own wallets, fees, income receipts and the values required for the relevant filing year. Record which chain and token you used; a ticker alone can be ambiguous. Separate transfers from purchases or disposals. A well-organised record helps explain source of funds when you later sell, move country or encounter a bank review. Avoid making your future adviser reconstruct years of activity from incomplete screenshots.

Reporting and emigration deserve preparation

Belastingdienst states that crypto service providers have reporting obligations from 1 January 2026; the implementation details and reporting periods should be checked for the provider and activity. Your own duties do not begin only when data reaches an authority. Moving abroad requires a genuine residence analysis and any relevant Dutch departure or non-resident return. A Paraguay cédula is not evidence that prior Dutch crypto omissions have disappeared.

Correct mistakes through the lawful route

If records or past returns are wrong, discuss correction with a qualified adviser and the tax authority’s applicable procedures. Do not shift funds between wallets to create a misleading history. I prefer a plan that can survive an ordinary question from a bank or tax office. Clear records, truthful reporting and a properly documented move create more durable freedom than hoping a balance stays unnoticed.
