Relocating as a Muslim: the UAE and other places to compare

Relocating as a Muslim: the UAE and other places to compare — religious practice, residence conditions, everyday freedom

By Ties Jezuit · Reviewed 14 October 2026 · General orientation

Define what religious fit means for you

Prayer access, halal food, Ramadan routines, schooling, family law and a welcoming community may matter in different proportions. Muslim people do not share one nationality, language or preferred legal system. Ask about the exact needs of your household, including a mixed-faith family or differing levels of observance. Being able to practise comfortably is valuable, but it should be considered alongside work, costs, legal status and other freedoms.

Why the UAE may be worth investigating

The UAE offers a setting where Islamic practice is part of ordinary public life, and has several residence categories. Its Golden Residency programme is a defined eligibility route, not a general entitlement for every Muslim applicant and not citizenship. Assess the category you actually qualify for, insurance, housing, work arrangements and what happens if employment or business circumstances change. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other emirates should not be treated as identical budgets or legal environments.

Check the boundaries as carefully as the advantages

Religious familiarity does not remove restrictions concerning speech, online conduct, drugs, medicines or personal behaviour. Local rules and their enforcement can differ from home, and personal-status questions can have major consequences. Review current official advice and obtain qualified guidance for family matters. Regional security conditions can also change rapidly. A Muslim-majority destination is not automatically free from discrimination, conflict or administrative dependence.

Other candidates, without a universal ranking

Malaysia, Indonesia, Oman, Qatar and Türkiye can be research candidates, alongside cities with established Muslim communities in other countries. This is not verification of a residence offer or a claim that all five share the same religious freedoms and obligations. Compare eligible immigration routes, school choices, language, community, costs and travel to family. Someone may prefer a pluralistic city close to home over a more distant Muslim-majority country.

Turn the shortlist into a household decision

Arrange a visit around normal working days and religious routines. Speak to residents with similar family circumstances and ask what surprised them after the move. Prepare a budget and independent legal checks. My role can be to help organise that comparison; I do not claim firsthand expertise in every listed destination. The right answer is the place where your faith, relationships and livelihood can work together on terms you understand.
