Bolivia, Paraguay and the life you want to build

Paraguay is my base. My work starts with your life, which may point toward Bolivia, another country or a more portable way of working. Compare places with a clear question and a plan you can test.

Onderweg op twee wielen

Start with the life, then shortlist the country

Write down the ordinary week you want: work hours, social life, climate, language, travel and the people you want nearby. Set three priorities and three conditions you cannot compromise on. Compare your current home with two alternatives using the same criteria. A move becomes easier to assess when the reasons are concrete and the trade-offs are visible. You do not need to decide on permanent relocation before exploring.

Planning your Bolivia move

Organise your move around six workstreams: an exploration call, planning a move, arrival assistance, residency coordination, practical setup and ongoing local help. Confirm the local base, languages and responsible professionals for your assignment. Community activities and introductions are arranged according to availability. Ask the provider for a written scope, responsible contacts, costs and exclusions. Ties’s planning work and a provider’s local assignment are separate engagements.

Compare cities before choosing an address

A city comparison can contrast Santa Cruz’s warm commercial setting with Cochabamba’s milder rhythm, La Paz’s high-altitude urban life, Sucre’s historic setting and Tarija’s smaller wine-country environment. Samaipata is another place to investigate. Altitude, climate, healthcare access and travel connections deserve separate checks. Current flight schedules and individual medical suitability require direct verification. Use these descriptions to shortlist places, then spend time in the neighbourhoods where you would actually live.

Build a budget in bolivianos

Dated August 2026 research gives illustrative monthly totals of roughly BOB 6,370 for a simple single-person scenario, BOB 13,560 for a more comfortable single-person scenario and BOB 18,010 for a comfortable couple. These are dated provider estimates with different inclusions, not quotes or my service prices. Its cheaper scenario excludes health cover. Build your own budget with rent, utilities, local versus imported groceries, transport, insurance and one-off relocation costs. Get current local quotes and check the exchange rate your payment method actually delivers.

Make a visit produce useful evidence

Choose a normal working week rather than filling every day with sightseeing. Test the internet at your accommodation, make a grocery shop, travel at the hours you would normally commute and ask about lease terms. Record spending in the local currency. Keep a short journal: what felt easy, what needed help, and what would become tiring after six months? Repeat the exercise in a second place before making an expensive commitment.

An immersion with a question to answer

Choose what the visit should resolve before choosing every stop. You might be comparing Santa Cruz and Samaipata, testing an ordinary working week, exploring a longer motorcycle route or preparing questions for a local professional. Planning only, selected accompanied days and a longer journey together are different scopes. Tell me your dates, pace and budget, then we agree a proposed itinerary and my role. Flights, accommodation, vehicle hire and independent providers are itemised separately.

Santa Cruz and Samaipata as a shorter starting route

You do not need to cross the whole country to learn something useful. A shorter visit can leave time for neighbourhood research in Santa Cruz and a different rhythm in Samaipata. Schedule ordinary errands, work time and conversations alongside the activities you enjoy. Record which conditions you could happily repeat for a month and which only appeal for a weekend. Ask about the exact accommodation, connectivity and transport you would use rather than treating a town name as a complete plan.

A longer route through the highlands

My Bolivia travel experience includes Cochabamba, Sucre, Potosí, Uyuni and Oruro as well as Santa Cruz and Samaipata. We can discuss these places as a possible overland journey. Distance, altitude changes, rest, road conditions and your vehicle experience determine what belongs in the itinerary. Confirm the rental agreement, licence recognition, insurance and recovery arrangements for the actual trip. A route can be adjusted; reaching every named destination should never become more important than the purpose and pace you agreed.

An arrival plan that continues after the first week

Write down what needs to work on arrival: the first accommodation, a reliable contact method, access to money, transport and a place where you can work. Keep the ongoing choices separate: a longer lease, a vehicle, membership activities or a formal application. Decide who is responsible for each task and how you will confirm completion. Your proposal should identify the next contact, the agreed period of support and which new requests would need a separate scope.

Separate residence, tax, banking and business

A provider’s relocation package does not answer every legal or financial question. Keep four separate workstreams: permission to stay, tax obligations in each relevant jurisdiction, banking eligibility and the right structure for your work. Ask each specialist to identify the authority, rule, document and ongoing obligation behind their advice. Bolivia and Paraguay have different procedures; do not transfer a checklist from one country to the other. This guide does not claim a particular Bolivian route or tax exemption fits you.

Portable work needs customers and routines

AI tools can help with research, drafting and delivery, but income still depends on a useful offer and customers willing to pay. Before moving, test one service with a defined deliverable, turnaround and price. Track the time it takes and the margin after software, payment fees and tax. Keep backups, reliable communications and more than one lawful way to receive payments. A different country can change your costs; it does not replace the work of building a business.

What I can help you clarify

Bring me the decision you are facing: comparing places, organising questions, planning a visit or making your work more portable. We can turn it into an agreed research and action plan. Paraguay remains my main base, and you can also request a Bolivia immersion, travel accompaniment or a route shaped around my overland experience. Planning, accompaniment and any local professional assignment have separate responsibilities and costs. Any introduction, local support or professional assignment must be confirmed before it is promised or priced.

Bolivia residence: prepare a route-specific review

Bolivia’s official migration regulation describes temporary permissions of one, two or three years depending on the activity, with renewals. It distinguishes entry visas from permission to stay and the foreigner identity document. That framework is a starting point, not a current universal application checklist. Prepare your nationality, intended activity, existing status and proposed dates for a route review. Ask which office handles the case and which current requirements apply before ordering documents or booking appointments.

Organise the document work without guessing

Make a readiness table with document type, issuing country, date issued, expiry, legalisation or apostille, translation and the person responsible for checking it. Ask the relevant professional which identity, purpose-of-stay, background, solvency and payment evidence your route actually requires. Do not assume all categories need the same evidence or that old online fee tables remain current. Keep originals and personal document numbers outside the public enquiry form. Once a route and scope are confirmed, documents should be handled through the agreed private process.

Read the practical Bolivia series

Continue with residency preparation and continuity, choosing your base and your first-month budget and arrival checklist. Each guide turns a broad decision into questions, evidence and a manageable next step.

Your next three steps

Complete a one-page priorities sheet. Collect a current housing, healthcare and work-connectivity quote for each shortlisted place. Then choose the smallest reversible step that will resolve your biggest uncertainty: a conversation, a test project or an exploratory stay. The aim is a life that works for you, with enough information to make the next decision honestly.
