Glyphosate and rural living: investigate exposure, not only a map

Neighbouring land use, water and spray practices deserve a place in property due diligence.

The evidence needs careful language

IARC classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans in 2015. EFSA’s 2023 assessment did not identify critical areas of concern for the evaluated uses while identifying data gaps; its topic page also tracks subsequent review work. These assessments have different purposes and methods. They do not justify saying every exposure causes cancer or that every neighbouring farm is harmless. Distinguish a hazard classification from the risk associated with a particular exposure.

Investigate the parcel and its neighbours

Ask what is grown nearby, which products are used, when spraying occurs and how water reaches your proposed home. Check the direction and source of drainage rather than relying on distance alone. Talk to neighbours and ask for available records. A rural address does not establish pesticide-free food or water. A competent environmental or water specialist can advise on an appropriate sampling and testing plan.

Food labels cannot answer every exposure question

Organic, natural, pasture-raised and grass-fed are different claims. Ask which certification or supply-chain evidence supports each one. A grass-fed label does not itself certify that a surrounding landscape has never been sprayed. Equally, the existence of agricultural activity nearby does not prove contamination of a particular product. Keep the questions specific enough that the seller or laboratory can answer them.

Use the findings before committing

Include land-use and water questions in the purchase brief alongside title, access and utilities. If important evidence is missing, treat it as a decision gate rather than fill the gap with reassurance or fear. I can help organise a scouting brief; exposure assessment and medical questions require the appropriate qualified professionals. The aim is a home you can evaluate with evidence, not a claim that Paraguay is either universally clean or universally unsafe.
