Why I would protect Dutch nationality while building a life abroad
Leaving the Netherlands and keeping Dutch citizenship are compatible decisions. An exit plan should preserve valuable rights where possible.

A nationality is more than your current address
Dutch nationality provides a durable right to return to the Netherlands and EU citizenship rights. Those rights can matter for future work, study, family circumstances and an unexpected need to change plans. I can disagree with the direction of policy while still recognising their value. My personal preference is to preserve that option. It is not a claim that nationality must be kept at any cost for every individual.
Emigration does not itself mean renunciation
Moving your everyday life and establishing the correct tax position abroad is different from giving up citizenship. Keeping a Dutch passport does not by itself make every Dutch citizen abroad a Dutch tax resident. Conversely, a second passport is not proof that Dutch tax residence has ended. Separate the nationality decision, factual residence and any Dutch-source income obligations rather than treating them as a single switch.
Another nationality requires a retention check
Voluntary acquisition of another nationality can cause loss of Dutch nationality unless a relevant exception applies. Marriage or registered partnership can be relevant, but the dates and the spouse’s nationality matter; the foreign acquisition rules remain separate. Long residence abroad with dual nationality can also trigger a loss rule if the relevant period is not interrupted in the prescribed way. Do not rely on a social-media summary or assume submitting a renewal application is identical to receiving the document.
Keep evidence and a forward calendar
Before naturalisation abroad, obtain advice using your exact history and keep the resulting documents. Maintain a renewal calendar well ahead of deadlines, including for children whose situation may differ. Consider the ability to return, the cost of obtaining replacement rights and the value to your family. I want additional choices to strengthen my position, rather than accidentally remove the strongest option I already have.
