Chile: plan residence and citizenship separately
A practical country guide to choosing your route, organising evidence and asking the separate nationality question. Use the current official checklist for an actual application.

The residence route
SERMIG separates temporary subcategories from definitive residence; a retirement/rentier application is made from abroad.
Retirement and rentier applications start abroad
The SERMIG retirement/rentier instructions require the temporary-residence application from abroad. Check whether your pension or income documents fit that particular subcategory, rather than assuming all remote earnings qualify. Foreign documents need the prescribed authentication and translation. Confirm the applicable criminal-history period, valid passport, dependants and document validity directly against the current checklist before submitting.
Citizenship and what still needs checking
The ordinary nationalisation page requires current definitive residence and five years counted from the relevant temporary-residence stamp; some family routes differ.
Protect the link between temporary and definitive residence
For ordinary nationalisation, SERMIG links the residence count to the temporary electronic stamp that led to the definitive residence still held. Keep those decisions and stamps, not only the newest card. A family-based reduced route has its own conditions. Ask separately about absences that affect definitive residence and absences that affect naturalisation. Neither a five-year anniversary nor an investment replaces the full assessment.
