Leaving the West: why another OECD country may not answer your question

If the problem is dependence on a familiar policy environment, a new address may change less than you expect. Start with the freedom you actually want.

Leaving the West: why another OECD country may not answer your question — your priorities, actual rules, a life that fits

By Ties Jezuit · Reviewed 14 October 2026 · General orientation

Define what you are trying to leave

I am interested in places that give me room to work, build and decide how to live. If your concerns are rising costs, administrative friction, financial surveillance or rules that keep expanding, moving between broadly similar systems may leave those concerns unresolved. That is a reason to compare concrete policies. It is not proof that every OECD member is bad, or that every non-member is free. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Mexico and Japan cannot sensibly be treated as one identical jurisdiction.

Financial reporting crosses the membership boundary

The OECD Common Reporting Standard provides for automatic exchange of financial-account information between participating jurisdictions. Participation extends beyond OECD membership. A non-OECD address is therefore not a promise of banking secrecy, and a residence card does not erase your former tax residence. Bank self-certifications must reflect your actual position. Compare the reporting framework, tax rules and access to usable accounts separately instead of expecting one geographic label to solve all three.

Compare the benefits you would also lose

Courts, healthcare, infrastructure, language, work rights and proximity to family have real value. A country with lower costs may bring less predictable administration, harder insurance or weaker consumer remedies. Put those trade-offs beside the things you dislike at home. Ask which frustrations are nationwide and which might improve in another city, job or neighbourhood. A freedom plan should improve your ordinary week, rather than merely look more radical on a map.

My way of building the shortlist

Write five priorities, three unacceptable risks and the monthly budget you can sustain. Compare an OECD option, a non-OECD option and staying put against the same list. Research the actual legal route, visit in an ordinary season and check how your money and work would function. My preference for Paraguay reflects the life I want to build there. It is an opinion informed by my priorities, not an institutional-membership test that decides everybody else’s future.
