Foz, Ciudad del Este and Pedro Juan Caballero: convenient borders with real rules
An easy-looking crossing does not mean unrestricted movement, an invisible stay or a substitute for migration records.

Understand the two border settings
The Friendship Bridge connects Ciudad del Este and Foz do Iguaçu. Pedro Juan Caballero adjoins Ponta Porã in a different border setting. Local movement can feel ordinary because commerce and daily routines cross the boundary. That experience should not be confused with permission for an unlimited stay, work or onward travel in either country. Your nationality, documents and purpose still matter.
Local transit is not the same as an onward journey
Paraguay Migraciones published a reminder about the Friendship Bridge’s local transit regime. It specifically warns that a foreigner entering there and later leaving through another migration post must first register the Paraguayan entry. Historical pandemic-era notices do not establish every current condition. Confirm the current perimeter, purpose and formalities with the authorities before relying on a local-transit arrangement.
Check both sides and the vehicle
Brazil’s Polícia Federal offers pre-registration for specified tourist border controls, including the Friendship Bridge; the generated record accompanies valid travel documents and does not replace the underlying rules. Paraguay has its own pre-registration process. Check vehicle permission, rental restrictions, insurance, customs and any rules for minors separately. A Paraguayan cédula does not universally replace the passport requirements applicable to a Dutch traveller.
Keep a coherent travel record
If you plan to continue to Asunción, fly out elsewhere or use presence records for an administrative purpose, clarify registration before travelling. Do not treat an unrecorded crossing as a method to manipulate tax or immigration evidence.
