A second nationality as a Dutch citizen: marriage, retention and the real sequence
Marriage can matter to a Dutch retention exception; it does not itself issue a foreign passport.

Check retention before acquiring anything
NetherlandsWorldwide says voluntary acquisition of another nationality generally causes loss of Dutch nationality, with defined exceptions. One concerns being married or in a registered partnership to a person who holds the nationality being acquired on the day of acquisition. The official guidance also describes birth/residence and childhood-residence exceptions and an Austria exclusion. Have your actual case checked before naturalising, rather than trying to repair an unexpected loss afterwards.
The foreign country has its own acquisition rules
A genuine marriage may affect residence or naturalisation in the spouse’s country, but its own conditions still apply. Marriage is not a purchased passport and should not be represented as an automatic immediate grant. Ask the foreign authority or an engaged lawyer about presence, relationship evidence, residence, application and approval. Then ask the Dutch side how the timing and evidence interact with retention.
Keep the documentary sequence clear
Record when the relationship became legally recognised, which nationality the spouse holds and the date on which you would acquire the new nationality. Civil records may need certification or translation. A partner with residence in a country is not necessarily a national of that country. Never submit invented relationship evidence or assume that an online anecdote covers an important difference in your facts.
Retention remains an ongoing responsibility
Dutch dual nationals abroad also need to review the official thirteen-year retention rule and the documents that prevent automatic loss in applicable circumstances. Keep reminders and arrange renewal well before a deadline. A second nationality should strengthen your real options without unintentionally removing rights you wanted to keep. I can help prepare the questions and sequence; a formal nationality assessment belongs with the competent authority or qualified adviser.
