Argentina: plan residence and citizenship separately

The residence route

RaDEX handles residence applications. Mercosur and non-Mercosur applicants must identify different qualifying categories.

Choose the residence category before RaDEX

A Dutch applicant should establish a qualifying non-Mercosur basis rather than selecting a regional category because they already live in South America. Prepare your identity, lawful-entry history and the supporting evidence for that basis. Ask how the temporary category can lead to permanent status, what changes must be reported and which absences affect continuity. Residence, DNI issuance and a naturalisation application are separate milestones.

Citizenship and what still needs checking

The current official naturalisation service requires two years of continuous lawful residence with no exit abroad, DNI and lawful livelihood. Eligibility is not approval. Separately, the government announced an investment-citizenship programme on 2 October 2026, with intake scheduled during Q4. A currently open intake is not confirmed here.

Build travel around the rule, not a passport advertisement

The official citizenship service expressly says no exit abroad during the qualifying two years. That is a major practical difference from simply holding a card for two calendar years. Before choosing this path, discuss your travel needs, lawful livelihood, Argentine criminal-record certificate and actual application procedure. Ask how any later legal change affects your case. Keep an evidence calendar rather than booking around a guaranteed passport date.
