Global shipping chokepoints and the everyday cost of disruption

A shipping route can affect prices and access long before a crisis appears in your own neighbourhood.

An island on the horizon

Identify the routes behind ordinary goods

Fuel, replacement parts, electronics and food inputs travel through interconnected logistics networks. UNCTAD’s maritime reviews examine disruption around critical routes, including the Suez and Panama canals. When traffic reroutes, distance, schedules and insurance can change. That does not mean every imported item immediately disappears; it means the channel deserves attention when you depend on a particular delivery or supplier.

A landlocked base has an additional logistics question

For Paraguay, investigate the regional and river connections relevant to the goods or business you rely on. Local production can reduce some dependencies while still requiring machinery, fuel or inputs. Ask where an essential product actually comes from and whether there is a substitute. A picture of green land or cattle is not a complete supply-chain analysis.

Distinguish a reserve from speculative hoarding

Keep sensible quantities of things you regularly use, observe safe storage and avoid buying equipment you cannot maintain. If you depend on medication or specialist parts, discuss continuity with the responsible provider. A business should review supplier alternatives and realistic delivery lead times. Financial reserves and useful local relationships can sometimes solve more than an expensive stockpile.

Make travel plans with room for change

A route combining flights, border crossings and rentals has multiple points of failure. Know the cancellation terms and how you would reach accommodation if a connection changed. I can help plan an exploratory journey and its practical alternatives. UNCTAD evidence supports taking transport resilience seriously; it does not support a guarantee that any country is immune to global disruption.
